Need a Feed gave away more than two tonnes of food and personal care items to needy families in Berkeley last week.
The charity joined forces with CareSouth to hand out food parcels and other items at CareSouth's Berkeley office.
Need a Feed founder Shaz Harrison-Shaw said it was one of their biggest food distribution days, with 2120 kilograms of items given away to more than 100 families.
"People were absolutely amazed at how much they were getting," she said.
"They were a lot of happy faces, people were crying ... it really brings it home how grateful people are and how much families are struggling."
Each family, for a $5 donation, received parcels containing non-perishable food, fruit and vegetables, bread, personal items and school supplies. Forty bags were also delivered to Warrawong Community Centre and 20 to Berkeley Neighbourhood Centre and school stationery was given to CareSouth for its homework hub.
Holly Arneman, who received a food parcel on the day to help supplement food for her partner and three children, said it was awesome.
"It's not like we go without but stuff like this is a top-up," she said.
Ms Arneman is part of CareSouth's Brighter Futures program which supports families in tough circumstances such as domestic violence, mental health or drug and alcohol problems.
"I'm a recovering addict and I have been clean for two years," she said.
"I came on the CareSouth program and they have helped me out heaps and got me back on track. I went to rehab and I'm doing good."
Brighter Futures family worker Helen Delaney said the distribution day was "fabulous for families".
