According to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), JDC Electrical Pty Limited went into external administration on Tuesday. When contacted, the company directed the Mercury to Wollongong-based administrator Danny Vrkic, of DV Recovery Management.
Late Wednesday, Mr Vrkic confirmed his appointment and said "the administrator is continuing the company's operations on a reduced scale".
"The director has advised the administrator that he will be putting forward to creditors a deed of company arrangement," he said.
The administrator said the first meeting of creditors would be held on August 7.
The JDC Electrical website describes the business as "a well established electrical company that have been in the industry for over 30 years", beginning operations in 1979.
Wollongong MP Noreen Hay spoke of the staff losses on Wednesday, urging Premier Mike Baird to "put words into action" about jobs.
Ms Hay called on Mr Baird to "deliver for the Illawarra as he would North Sydney".
"From where Mr Baird sits, he may catch a glimpse of Kirribilli House but from where I sit, I see the demise of the once great steel industry in Australia and the knock-on effect of that to the Illawarra and Wollongong. Positive bi-partisan action can produce positive results," Ms Hay said.
