Initial investigations suggest the 51-year-old, from Lake Illawarra, rode out of Dyson Avenue in front of a Ford Territory travelling on Peterborough Avenue just before 6pm.
The impact saw the man propelled across the bonnet and windscreen of the car before he fell onto the road and was left unconscious with critical injuries to the face and chest.
Emergency services treated the man before taking him to Wollongong Hospital in a critical but stable condition.
The driver of the car, a 22-year-old man, was not injured and was taken to Shellharbour Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing. The passengers, two women aged 22 and 54, a man aged 57 and a baby, were uninjured.
According to police, the man was not wearing a helmet and his bike was not fitted with lights. The bicycle and car have been seized for examination.
Investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact Lake Illawarra police on 4232 5599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
