It's now more than two weeks since the Bronwyn Bishop expenses scandal began. Having initially declined to apologise, saying her claims were within entitlements, on Thursday, she apologised for "letting down the Australian people". However, as new revelations continue to surface about her history of expense claims, there are numerous questions Mrs Bishop has failed to answer.

Mrs Bishop has said she will continue to sit in the Speaker's chair while the Finance Department investigates the past 10 years of her travel claims, however the department has said it has "no intention of making the results of its investigation into the Speaker public".

This is what we'd like to know.

The chopper flight

In November 2014, Mrs Bishop spent $5227 of taxpayers' money on a helicopter charter flight from Melbourne to Geelong to attend a Liberal fundraiser.

Mrs Bishop has said that attending the fundraiser constituted official Speaker business and said in that role: "I speak to community groups, I'll speak to Liberal groups, I'll even speak to Labor groups." A statement from her office said: "The Speaker had a number of meetings during her visit to Victoria and always seeks to fit in as many meetings and events into her schedule as is possible." It has since emerged that while in Melbourne Mrs Bishop also attended a fundraiser in Brighton, however she has not provided details of any other appointments. 

• Do you still believe that speaking at a political fundraiser is official business for the parliamentary office of the Speaker?
• Can you provide evidence that the helicopter you chartered was the cheapest of three quotes? Did your chief-of-staff's close friendship with the contractor of the chosen provider affect the outcome?
• You said that, as it is official business, you would be happy to attend a Labor Party fundraiser as well. A Labor branch has invited you to their function - do you plan to accept?
• Do you intend to pay back the $1700 in further travel costs - flights to and from Melbourne, Comcars and travel allowance - associated with the Geelong fundraiser?

The Eurotrip

In October 2014 Mrs Bishop claimed $88,000 in entitlements on a two-week trip to Europe largely to secure a prestigious international position. This included costs for two staff members with $25,400 on accommodation and food, and an average $1000 per day on limousines.

"It's the first and only time she has taken two staff," her spokesman told Fairfax Media when defending the trip. "That was due to the size of the trip and the fact she was running for [Inter-Parliamentary Union] president." Asked if the spending was reasonable, the spokesman said: "That's what it costs."

These costs were $25,000 more than the combined totals for the four MPs who travelled with her, who spent a total of $62,327.

The weddings

So far we know that Mrs Bishop has claimed expenses to attend the weddings of at least three Liberal colleagues. This includes flights when she attended Sophie Mirabella's celebration in Albury in 2006, one night's travel allowance when she went to Teresa Gambaro's in Brisbane in 2007 and more travel allowance for Michael Kroger's in Melbourne in 1999. Two years ago Tony Abbott repaid $1100 in costs he claimed from Mrs Mirabella's wedding. Other Liberals who attended the 1999 wedding but did not claim expenses include then prime minister John Howard and treasurer Peter Costello.

Mrs Bishop initially defended the two most recent wedding trips, saying she had meetings with confidential sources as part of committee business she was involved in. On Thursday, she announced that she would be paying back all money she claimed for trips to weddings but while the claims were within the rules, they didn't "look right".

These latest expense claims were exposed after a "not happy" Prime Minister Tony Abbott had already said the Speaker was "on probation".

• Is there evidence of this secret meeting? If there is, why can't you release it?
• Are there any other weddings you have claimed expenses to attend?
• Last week, Mr Abbott said you were on probation. Since then, the wedding expense claims have been revealed and you have had to pay them back. Should you resign?

The limos

A Fairfax analysis of Mrs Bishop's expenses show she spent more than $3300 hiring limousines to attend arts events such as Opera Australia's La Boheme while in opposition (as shadow minister of state and for seniors). "It's quite proper," a spokesman said at the time. "Members of both sides use entitlements for [such] events."

• If this behaviour is widespread, why are members of Parliament allowed to use entitlements to attend events that are outside their portfolio?
• Is it appropriate to hire limousines rather than use taxis or other means of transport?
