Paper Towns author John Green has defended actress Cara Delevingne and accused the media of asking her questions different to her male co-star following a disastrous interview earlier this week.

In a blog post called 'But did you read the book?', Green said Delevingne, 22, had been asked hundreds of times whether she had read the book, a question never posed to her co-star in the film, Nat Wolff.

"I spent more than a month with her on tour in Europe and the U.S., and I watched as again and again, she was asked this question."

"Cara has read the book (multiple times), but the question is annoying — not least because her male costar, Nat Wolff, was almost always asked when he'd read the book, while Cara was almost always asked if she'd read it."

The English actress was accused of having a bad attitude and being in need of a nap by the hosts of Good Day Sacramento during a promotional interview for the new film on Wednesday.

The hosts called her "Carla" before asking her if she'd read the book, how she juggled being so busy, and why she didn't seem excited about the film. They cut the interview short when Delevingne seemed less than enthused about their questions.

Green, who also penned bestseller The Fault in Our Stars, said he had done 300 on-air interviews in the past two months for the film, and had given up trying to give interesting and thoughtful answers to the questions he is asked ad neuseum.

"Look, these are obviously the first worldiest of first world problems, but the whole process of commodifying personhood to sell movie tickets is inherently dehumanizing."

"[Cara] refuses to indulge lazy questions and refuses to turn herself into an automaton to get through long days of junketry. I don't find that behaviour entitled or haughty. I find it admirable."

"Cara Delevingne doesn't exist to feed your narrative or your news feed — and that's precisely why she's so f**king interesting."

The actress shared Green's kind words on Twitter and said she was happy to know him. She also said she was not ungrateful for her opportunities in the modelling and acting world, and wouldn't apologise for being human.
