Kwan Ie Kwo, 59, who lives on his own in flats at Mangerton, pleaded guilty in Port Kembla Local Court to charges of providing liquor to a minor and supplying a prohibited drug, but tried to downplay the seriousness of the situation, saying it was the girl who chose to ingest the substances and he thought she was older.

"She took it ... she drank it," Kwo grumbled during his sentencing on Friday.

"I thought she was 16, she said she was 16."

But his excuses did not wash with presiding magistrate Michael Stoddart, who labelled his behaviour "an absolute disgrace".

The court heard the girl had been introduced to Kwo by a friend two days before she turned up at his unit on her own and asked him for cannabis and alcohol.

Kwo said he didn't have either, but agreed to go to Wollongong CBD and buy them.

He caught a bus to Burelli Street, bought a bottle of gin and a bottle of Southern Comfort, then bought $20 worth of cannabis in Crown Street and headed home.

The girl returned to the unit just after midday and the pair sat together and smoked a bong.

At the same time, Kwo also gave the girl two shots of gin and a 250ml glass of Southern Comfort, which she drank straight.

Court documents said Kwo soon became "annoyed" with the girl and walked her home.

However, by this stage, she had become "incoherent" with the amount of alcohol and cannabis she'd consumed.

The girl's mother put her daughter in the bath and tried to wake her with cold water, but called emergency services when she was still unresponsive.

The child was rushed to Wollongong Hospital for treatment.

Blood samples returned an alcohol reading of 0.2 grams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood - the same reading in an adult would put them at four times above the legal limit to drive.

Kwo was arrested later that day and admitted to both offences when questioned by police.

In court on Friday, defence lawyer John Gallagher said his client had remained out of trouble with the law since 1995, but conceded he did have prior drug convictions.

He said Kwo was facing up to his responsibilities.

"This was stupid and wrong and his pleas of guilty have acknowledged that," Mr Gallagher said.

In handing down the jail sentence, Mr Stoddart said the community would be rightly outraged by Kwo's behaviour.

"It's disgraceful what you've done. To deal with this by way of a suspended sentence or intensive correction order in my view would be totally inappropriate," he said.

Kwo will be released on November 30.
