University provided a fitting farewell to NSW Country Eagles forward Paul Tuala with Saturday's 50-12 demolition of Shoalhaven at University Oval.

Tuala scored two of the Mallee Bulls' eight tries in his final appearance before returning to the Eagles for their National Rugby Championship campaign.

The 30-year-old No 8 is hopeful of lining up for the Bulls in the major semi-final if it doesn't clash with his Eagles commitments, but Uni coach Dion Miller believes the chances are slim.

"It was Paulie's last game for us. He's in the NRC again now, so he's finished up with us," Miller said.

Tuala was in the same boat last year when Eagles duty kept him out of Uni's charge to the premiership.

"It's just something we have to deal with," Miller said.

"He's made a commitment to the Eagles and won't be playing any more games. It's sad for us but we support him as a club.

"It's nice to send him off with a good team performance and a couple of tries under his belt."

Shoalhaven kept the Bulls scoreless for the opening 10 minutes before the home side asserted their authority with three quick tries.

The lead was a comfortable 29-0 at half-time, but Shoalies stiffened their resolve in the second half, scoring two tries to avoid an embarrassing shut-out.

"We actually thought it would be a lot tighter game than that," Miller said.

"We were expecting a top level game because they've been travelling very well."

Miller said the Bulls successfully implemented a new game plan.

"We've been pretty simple the first part of the year just so everybody was on the same page throughout the club," he said. "Today we changed it a bit to what we think suits our players now that we know what our make-up is, and it seemed to pull off pretty good.

"It's stuff we've been practising throughout the year but today was the first time we used it in a game. Normally we wait and let teams do their thing and then attack them, but today was all about coming out of the blocks first with a new style to see if we could handle it.

"It was good to watch, and I see that Ladies Day makes everyone play a bit better, too."

Uni remained in second spot, four points ahead of Kiama and nine behind Avondale.

"We want to finish second and play Avondale first-up in the finals," Miller said.

"I think we'll hit our straps at the right time."

Avondale romped to a 64-19 victory over Campbelltown, while Vikings boosted their finals prospects with a 50-19 home win over Bowral.

Kiama beat Tech Waratahs 46-17 and Shamrocks accounted for Camden 26-12.
