A community group calling for better access to Unanderra railway station has launched an online petition to help garner support for the cause from across the Illawarra region and beyond.
Unanderra Access Group member Bec Schmidt set up the petition at change.org last week and passed the 500-signature mark within days.
Ms Schmidt, a StrokeSafe ambassador for the National Stroke Foundation who features on a YouTube video of people struggling up the stairs at Unanderra, said by making use of the change.org website, the group hoped to attract signatures from a broader audience than Unanderra.
The website also has the capacity for people to post reasons why they support the petition and tell their stories of problems experienced at the station.
In 2012, Wollongong MP Noreen Hay presented a 10,000-signature petition to Parliament.
Ms Schmidt said it was important people kept the campaign for the once-promised lifts on the agenda.
"This is not a good situation and this petition gives everyone an opportunity to contribute," Ms Schmidt said.
"We want as many people as we can to get on board."
She also said it was important that as many people as possible signed the petition. Otherwise, it might indicate community support for improved access wasn't strong.
"The more people we can get signing this and supporting it, the more chance we have of putting a case forward where there's a need for something to be done at Unanderra station about the access," she said.
