Speaking after a meeting with the state chamber on Monday, Ms Murphy said the move was about the Illawarra and NSW chambers working together more.
She said they both had a shared vision for the region and a vision for the Illawarra Business Chamber that would better drive economic development, build businesses and deliver more jobs.
"Monday was an opportunity for local business leaders to share their input on the road map to put the Illawarra first, Ms Murphy said.
"The proposed merger of the state and regional chambers will enhance what we already do to support business with stronger thought leadership, greater knowledge, and powerful and respected influence to put the region's economy in a winning position," she said.
Ms Murphy believed the more co-ordinated approach would not only be a good thing for business but for the whole region.
"This fantastic merger opportunity will cement the long-standing partnership between the IBC and NSWBC," she said.
NSW Business Chamber chief executive Stephen Cartwright said if IBC members approved the merger on August 11 it would enhance the collaboration of local, regional, state and national chambers. "They will have strength in numbers and be an even stronger voice of business in the region," he said.
