Emma Tonegato never dreamed of representing Australia at the Olympic Games.
That's mainly because her chosen disciplines - touch football and rugby league - weren't on the Olympic agenda.
But her focus shifted when it was announced rugby would make a return to the Games in 2016. She flicked the Steeden and picked up a Gilbert ball.
Three years later she hopes to be standing atop the podium in Rio with a gold medal around her neck.
"I only started playing rugby about two years ago, but ever since I started I thought about going to the Olympics," Tonegato said.
"I played a bit of league and really enjoyed that, I played NSW schoolgirls and everything.
"Then I got scouted, got asked to play sevens rugby and thought it would be cool."
What started as a "cool" change of sporting codes could result in an Olympic medal in a little over 12 months.
Tonegato, 20, was enticed to try her hand at rugby sevens by close friend Nicole Beck, who she grew up with in the Illawarra.
"Our families are actually quite close so we moved up [to Sydney] together and lived together for a period," Beck said.
"It would be amazing to share that [an Olympic medal] - it would be very special."
Australia became just the second nation to qualify for the women's sevens draw at the 2016 Games and will spend the coming 12 months preparing for it.
They will host Japan and Canada in the coming weeks, and will head to Dubai in December for the first leg of the World Series.
The squad for the Olympics won't be selected until a month out from the event.
Tonegato is determined to book herself a seat on the plane to Rio.
