It was 1994 and it was a big year. Muriel's Wedding rocked the box office, Mal Meninga ended his NRL playing career, while four Perth teenagers formed a rock band.
Taking their name from a Simpsons character, Jebediah leapt onto the Australian music stage where they remain more than two decades later. In 1995, they won the Australian National Campus Band Competition, and even nabbed the opening slot at the Summersault Music Festival, before high-profile bands Beastie Boys, Foo Fighters and Sonic Youth.
Three years later came their first major release, Slightly Odway, including soon-to-become-iconic Aussie anthems such as Leaving Home and Harpoon.
Fast forward to today, and lead guitarist Chris Daymond thinks it's "brilliant" to be still hitting the road. "By default we've gotten to this point, so we're very grateful to be here, I guess," he says. "It's like riding a wave.
"If you can bring an audience with you on that ride you're putting two and two together. Tastes change - people are very fickle - so if you can retain an audience over 20 years you're obviously giving people something they want."
Daymond, along with Kevin Mitchell on vocals and guitar, Vanessa Thornton on bass, and Kev's older brother Brett on drums, have performed in the Illawarra countless times and are psyched to do it all over again at Waves in Towradgi on August 29.
"We've never shied away from not playing the songs that people want to hear, we've always embraced other people's enthusiasm to hear our music," he said. "You either want to perform and entertain people or you don't."
So expect to be jumping to some of the hits that shaped Australian air-waves: Leaving Home, She's Like a Comet and Lost My Nerve.
In the first set they'll be sifting through the Jebediah back catalogue, before thrashing out their first ever LP from start to finish in the second set.
Perhaps it's other creative endeavours outside of the group that have Daymond and the others passionate.
Kevin Mitchell most notably went off for a while under the guise of Bob Evans to produce solo work, while bassist Vanessa continues to play with Axe Girl. Daymond admits he too has dabbled with other musos but said it was painting and cooking that he loved the most.
"I definitely know Kevin's commitment to his own art has always extended around and outside of the band," he said.
"Ever since I first met him, even before Jebediah was even a thing, you could tell that was something that's part of who Kev is.
"He would explore his desire in any given direction, whatever it is. When I first met him, he was a great long-distance runner, and he represented WA and [went] in international competitions and things like that. His focus then was to be a good runner, and he was."
"I just play in my band and I can do other things outside of that, I don't feel the pressure that it needs to be my spotlight.
"Without taking away any momentum from the band, it's a hobby for all four members.
"It wouldn't have lasted 20 years otherwise, because to remain focused you need more to happen in 20 years than what we've done."
