A STATE-OF-THE-ART scanner is giving Wollongong optometrists a better view of the eye than ever before.
"In a single scan we have a greater chance of detecting abnormalities which could indicate an eye condition," optometrist Melissa Lee said, referring to the Optos Daytona Ultra-Wide Digital Retinal Scanner at Wollongong's OPSM store.
"The scanner allows us to see a 200-degree view of the back of the eye in a single scan in less than five minutes, compared with only 45 degrees using standard scanning machines," she said.
Ms Lee said an estimated 2 million Australians aged 18-44 had either never had their eyes tested or had not got them tested in the past five years.
"It's never too early for people to get their eyes checked," she said.
"The key is to detect eye conditions as early as possible, especially when 80 per cent of blindness is preventable."
