He was instead at the Symbio Wildlife Park at Helensburgh on Friday reacquainting himself with a now not-so baby alligator named Rambo he’d met in December of 2013.
The Secret Life of Us actor first met Rambo at Symbio while unicycling around the country to raise money for Love Your Sister, a foundation set up to raise money for cancer institute, the Garvan Research Foundation.
Love Your Sister, which to date has raised over $2million, was founded in honour of Johnson’s sister Connie, who is fighting breast cancer.
Johnson has been in Wollongong this week performing his own production’s stage show of Sex With Strangers with Tottie Goldsmith at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre.
Connie attended the show on Wednesday night, the first time she’d seen her brother perform the show.
"Connie’s had a tough year. She doesn’t bounce back like she used too," Johnson said,
"We feel like the cancer is winning at the moment, but she might bounce back next week, that’s her tendency."
While back in the Illawarra, Johnson was keen to return to Symbio.
"I wanted to say hi to the animals, but thanks to the park for supporting me during the Love Your Sister ride," he said.
"Any of the memorable stops I had during the ride I try to get back and say thanks."
Life for Johnson since the charity ride has not stopped and it’s set to continue as he plays the iconic role of Molly Meldrum in a Channel Seven mini series to air over the summer aptly titled Molly.
"I’ve spent heaps of time with him and I’ve known him for 15 years," Johnson said.
"There’s no pressure really playing a living legend, but Molly has seen it and given me the nod of approval."
*Johnson and Goldsmith will appear at a free Merrigong Talking Point on Saturday at 5 pm.
