An Illawarra delegation making the case for Port Kembla steelworks' future met the region's two federal Labor MPs and opposition industry spokesman Kim Carr in Canberra on Wednesday.

South Coast Labour Council secretary Arthur Rorris said the politicians had expressed their concern and a need for action.
"I think the sense of urgency and concern is now getting through to Canberra," Mr Rorris said.
"People realise something has to be done."
On Thursday, the group - which includes AWU Port Kembla secretary Wayne Phillips and two steelworkers - will meet with Liberal parliamentarians Concetta Fierravanti-Wells and Ann Sudmalis, as well as Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane.
