What do beards, braids and barefoot bowls have in common?
Illawarra Intrepid Landcare co-ordinator Megan Rowlatt hopes the three ingredients will help raise funds for young environmental volunteers.
"It's really challenging to secure small buckets of funding for tools and resources for Landcare groups, it's a very competitive space. Often these things come at the expense of the volunteers themselves, so we've decided to get a bit creative," Ms Rowlatt said.
Illawarra Intrepid Landcare has teamed up with Beardson and Landcare Australia to host a community barefoot bowls event at Towradgi Park Bowls and Recreation Park on Sunday.
Bowls, live music, prizes for best beards and braids (for the ladies) will feature at the August 23 event, from noon-4pm.
Local businesses such as Hair by Ash J Collins will provide hair braiding, and performing arts studio Chaplin Arts will co-ordinate the entertainment.
There will be craft beer prize packs, sustainable merchandise and other prizes on offer.
A range of environment organisations will also have stalls where the public can pick up information.
Funds raised will go to Illawarra Intrepid Landcare, which provides dynamic opportunities for young people to contribute to protecting the environment.
Funds will also go to new kids on the block, UOW Intrepid Landcare Club, which need tools and resources to kick off their projects and keep adding to the opportunities for young people in the Illawarra to give back to the environment.
"We also hope the event will raise awareness about the volunteering opportunities for the community to get involved in, particularly young people," Ms Rowlatt said.
Volunteers from Beach Clean Ups Illawarra, Fish Thinkers, Surfrider Foundation South Coast and Clean Coast Collective will get together for a beach clean up at Towradgi Beach on Sunday. Community members can help from 9am.
