The meeting at the University of Wollongong was an opportunity for auditor of the judges to go through the process with those responsible for selecting winners for this year's 15 categories.
KPMG Wollongong managing partner Warwick Shanks revealed 11 categories were aligned with the NSW Business Chamber state awards and four were Illawarra-only categories.
And that included the return of the Illawarra Business of the Year.
"Winners of the Illawarra awards aligned with the NSW awards automatically become finalists at the state level."
He said the online written entries accounted for half the total score and finalists would be determined from that before interviews were held with them to determine the winner in each category by combining both the written and interview scores.
Shoalhaven Chamber Business Award winners automatically become finalists in the Illawarra Business Chamber run regional event and finalists won't be named and notified until September 7.
The awards will be presented at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre on October 23.
