Police charged Geoffrey Gordon Hinkley, 55, with 13 serious drug offences on Thursday after allegedly finding more than a kilogram of amphetamine and 140 grams of cocaine in his Mitsubishi Lancer during a vehicle stop on the Princes Highway just before one o’clock in the morning.
A police statement released on Friday afternoon said Hinkley was pulled over for a random breath test, which came back negative for alcohol or illicit substances, but police claimed they had ‘‘cause to search the car’’, allegedly uncovering the drug stash as a result.
Hinkley was arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra police station.
A home at Kiama allegedly linked to Hinkley was searched by investigating officers on Thursday afternoon, with police claiming they unearthed another kilogram of amphetamine, 136g of cocaine, 119g of MDMA tablets and 62g of MDMA powder.
Police also discovered cash and a semi-automatic ‘‘Ruger’’ branded rifle at the premises.
Hinkley was charged with two counts of supplying a large commercial quantity of drugs, four counts of supplying an indictable quantity of drugs, two counts of knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime and five firearm-related charges.
He did not apply for bail during a brief appearance in Port Kembla Local Court on Friday, as police prosecutor Sergeant Biffin said detectives had flagged the likelihood of more charges being laid against Hinkley in the next few days.
A brief of evidence was ordered in the case and the matter adjourned.
