The Illawarra Police Charity Ball was not just a charming evening, it was a signal of hope for those choosing between life and death.

About $28,000 was raised for Lifeline and NSW Police Legacy at the July 31 ball to support the work of both organisations.

This isn't the first collaboration between Lifeline South Coast and Illawarra police officers - they often work hand in hand to support those in crisis.

Lifeline South Coast executive director Grahame Gould said the funds would go towards buying a new Lifeline truck for collecting and transporting second-hand clothing.

"It enables us to continue to earn our own money and keep our 24-hour crisis support line working," Mr Gould said.

Mr Gould admires the police, who he says have an extremely challenging job.

"When we've got callers, who are considering life and death, there are times that we ask the police to help someone.

"They're going into a real-life situation, where it's really uncertain and stressful, and they handle it well."
