NSW Premier Mike Baird needs to talk to the Illawarra about the future of Port Kembla, according to Shellharbour MP Anna Watson.
She also wants major government infrastructure projects brought forward to help the steelworks.
Ms Watson made the call in a notice of motion lodged in NSW Parliament on Tuesday. The final point in the six-point motion "calls on the Premier to make a ministerial statement on the future of the steel industry in NSW, and particularly the Illawarra region as a matter of urgency."
The motion also noted the community petition that has gained support in the region and the work done by the South Coast Labour Council and the Illawarra branch of the Australian Workers Union.
In another notice of motion, Ms Watson wanted the government to get to work on the construction of the Shellharbour Hospital upgrade in 2016 and the Albion Park Rail Bypass the following year.
She said these projects, worth $800 million, could help address the steel crisis facing the Illawarra.
"These two projects, according to the state government's own budget and election commitments, are both funded," Ms Watson said.
"There is simply no excuse to not start these two projects as soon as possible given the crisis of confidence the region is facing with the steel industry."
