Like many schools in the Illawarra, St Pius X Unanderra joined in the fun.
It is the 70th anniversary of the Children’s Book Council of Australia literary event, and the 24th year the Unanderra educator has joined in the fun.
Librarian Verity Barnett said students had come to school dressed as their favourite book characters, while the teachers were all in costume and parents got involved too.
‘‘I love watching the engagement on the children’s faces when you read a book. It’s completely different from a movie, and they’re wanting to know what comes on the next page,’’ she said.
The day was an ode to books and involved a costume parade, year 6 students buddying up with kindy kids to read, dance performances, and even the children using computer programs to make ‘‘trailers’’ for their favourite stories.
