But for the next three days, university administrators and managers will take centre stage as the annual Tertiary Education Management Conference takes place at Wollongong’s Novotel Northbeach hotel.
More than 600 delegates have registered for the event, with some coming from as far away as South Africa, the UK and the US.
Peter Maywald, a former faculty executive manager at the University of Wollongong and part of the organising team for this year’s event, estimated almost a million dollars will be injected into the community during their stay.
‘‘With the recent news about the Bluescope downturn, I think it’s good for people to know these types of events are coming to the area,’’ he said. ‘‘We’re expecting it to inject a substantial amount of money into the economy.’’
A welcome reception was held at Novotel Northbeach on Sunday evening, with the conference program set to get under way on Monday morning with an address from NSW Governor David Hurley.
The event has attracted an impressive lineup of speakers, including former Prime Minister Julia Gillard and South Coast burns survivor Turia Pitt.
