9:28am: It is unclear whether the male driver and female passenger in the vehicle were actually in the vehicle at the time it was hit by the train.
The driver and passenger were not injured.
It is understood the lights at the Nolan Street level crossing were operational a the time of the accident.
There were no reported injuries to train passengers.
9: 26am: The Princess Highway at Unanderra has now reopened to traffic.
The car and debris from the accident have been removed from the road.
9:11am: The accident has caused several changes to train services, including the cancellation of the 9.02am Thirroul to Port Kembla service and the 9:13am Bondi Junction to Kiama service being altered to start its journey at Central.
8:33am: The accident occurred at the level crossing on the Princes Highway, about 200 metres south of the Nolan Street intersection.
The bonnet of the car has become wedged under the front of the train, which has then dragged it along the road.
The commuter train has come to rest across the road, blocking traffic in both directions.
UPDATE: 8.25am: The accident involved a car colliding with a train.
The accident happened shortly before 7am.
According to a NSW Ambulance spokesman, it is believed there was no one on the car when the train hit it.
BREAKING: 8.00am: Emergency services are at the scene of a car and train accident at Unanderra, which is causing delays to rail commuters and motorists.
The accident has partially closed the South Coast line in both directions between Unanderra and Dapto.
However, southbound passengers travelling beyond Unanderra will need to change at Wollongong for a bus service.
Buses are replacing trains between Wollongong and Dapto and a shuttle train service is operating between Dapto and Kiama.
Passengers are advised to allow plenty of additional travel time.
Buses are being diverted along Nolan Street and Orange Grove Avenue. Five bus stops are being missed in both directions.
Routes affected are: 31, 33, 37 and 57.
