The girl was approached by a man in a grey ute as she walked through Hooker Creek netball courts about 3.15pm Friday
She has told police she ran from the area after the man left his car, came towards her and threatened her.
The girl told her mother of the incident.
Lake Illawarra Police canvassed the surrounding area, but could not locate the man or the car.
Police would like to speak to a man described as being aged in his 30s, with tanned skin, brown eyes and a medium build. He is further described as having thick eyebrows and short brown hair, wearing a blue and green jacket and black tracksuit pants.
The incident has prompted police to encourage parents to discuss safety with their children.
Children should know the location of area safe places - a shop, service station, police station, library or school. They should yell "go away, I don't know you", if someone tries to grab them.
