In 2013, a long running debate that involved the developers of a new housing estate, Kiama councillors, the council’s own naming committee and the historical society ended with councillors rejecting the proposal to name a street within the Munna Munnora Estate subdivision, Orry-Kelly Place.
The developers of the 35-lot estate, which overlooks Easts Beach, had initially proposed to name the road Success Avenue.
But the streets and reserves naming committee supported the Kiama and District Historical Society’s recommendation to name the street Orry-Kelly Place.
The developers weren’t impressed and requested another name be chosen, one associated with the Kendall family who had a historical connection to that part of Kiama.
After further debate the council accepted the name Surfleet Place, after Thomas Surfleet Kendall, who owned the land in question after the death of his father, Reverend Thomas Kendall, in 1832.
The current chair of the council’s streets and reserves naming committee councillor Dennis Seage said the committee had turned its attention to the Hindmarsh Park stage, rather than a road, reserve or park.
‘‘We thought because of his involvement with the entertainment industry the stage may be more appropriate than a road or park as it is within the theme of what his profession was,’’ Cr Seage said.
‘‘If we had a theatre like the Roo Theatre, it would be ideal, but the stage is the closest thing we have in Kiama.’’
Meantime a screening of the Gillian Armstrong’s documentary Women He’s Undressed, which details the life of the triple Oscar winner, takes place in Gerringong next month.
The Kiama and District Historical Society are organising a ‘‘Celebration of Orry-Kelly night’’ which will include a screening of Women He’s Undressed.
It will take place on Saturday, October 3 at 7.30pm at Gerringong Town Hall.
The event will be a combined function of the Historical Society and Gerringong Pics and Flicks.
Tickets are $15 from the Kiama Visitors Centre.
