Many are doing work for the local mining and steel making industry but winning more business outside the region.
The annual i3net industry showcase started on Wednesday with a tour of the Innovation Campus, WGE, Ringway, Thomas & Coffey, R.Stahl and Fibre Optics Design and Construct followed by a dinner with delegates from NSW Public Works, South 32, ANSTO, The BRAGG Institute, Navantia, Heron Resources and Lend Lease.
During Wednesday’s tour Thomas & Coffey's Wollongong general manager Peter Buckley spoke of a flexible 250 strong workforce.
He gave examples of the business taking on large scale projects across Australia but last week was able to have 220 people onsite at Port Kembla.
Thomas & Coffey recently did an upgrade to a 200 person bathhouse at an Illawarra mine that involved the air-conditioning, plumbing, mechanical installation and fabrication.
It built a helicopter training simulator facility at HMAS Albatross and repaired a giant hatch from a ship.
‘’Because of our diversity we can do air-conditioning, electrical, carpentry, specialised welding, engineering support and project management,’’ Mr Buckley said.
‘’We travel to the Pilbara, Victoria and Adelaide. Across Australia our people are seen as having good skills, qualifications and a can do attitude who can work anywhere.’’
