Packer joined the Dragons upon being released from prison in January and was forced to complete pre-dawn sessions on his own as he awaited the NRL’s decision as to whether he was fit to return to field.
His hope of playing in the top grade were quashed in April this year but the NRL did allow Packer to turn out for the Dragons feeder team the Illawarra Cutters in the NSW Cup.
After making his first appearance for the Cutters in May, Packer has proven an on-field powerhouse and won praise from coach Scott Logan for his qualities as a leader.
After being named the Illawarra Cutters’ player of the year last week, Packer’s selection in the NSW Cup Team of the Year is another boost after he was cleared to begin training with the Dragons NRL squad in August.
