Thirroul based gaming developer Lime Rocket got together with organiser of the Wonderwalls Festival Simon Grant and local artist Bafcat to create the multimedia. The opening night of the Blender festival will also see the unveiling of their “world first” web accessible controller.
Smartphone users will be able to log onto a web address to ‘tap and play’, then can begin on a race against other players to find the body to their individual skeleton heads whilst dodging obstacles. Lime Rocket founder & CEO Mike Gardiner likened it to the Nintendo classic Mario Kart, except it uses characters designed by a local artist.
The tech company is currently Telstra’s first and only investment in gaming, with Mr Gardiner and his team proudly working on creating a multiplayer game for 40,000 players that could be setup in Sydney’s ANZ Stadium.
“This is all our company does, we just make crowd games,” he said.
The inception of their work came about because they wanted to turn technology dependence on it’s head, as it has become so embedded in everyday life.
“We saw the smartphone initially as an anti-social device,” said Mr Gardiner.
“[We opened] up an opportunity to turn it into a playful device, it allows us to connect with other people around you in the same space and the same event and have a fun experience.”
The interactive technology will also make other appearances around Wollongong during the weekend including at the Yours and Owls festival at Stuart Park.
“Might sound corny, but it’s a dream come true. I love the fact there’s a convergence between digital, music and art. The fact that technology is the glue between us, we love it.”
Mr Gardiner also let slip this could be a taste of something more permanent to be unveiled in Wollongong late October, hinting at the possibility of more interactive games to light up our city in fixed locations.
Blender runs in conjunction with the Wonderwalls graffiti art and Yours & Owls music festivals.
