The 36-year-old Marrickville man reported his phone was stolen from a unit in Surry Hills on March 15.
He struck lucky when two days later, police found the stolen phone after stopping and searching a man on George Street in Sydney's CBD.
That man was arrested and charged.
Officers later went through the phone and discovered child pornography had allegedly been sent through an instant message app before it was stolen.
The phone owner was arrested at a Marrickville home on Thursday and charged with accessing and transmitting child pornography.
He was granted conditional bail to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on October 22.
