Keegan Michael Giacon, a 21-year-old Albion Park Rail man whose occupation is listed on court documents as “private nanny”, is alleged to have downloaded 537 photos and one video in recent months featuring “horrendous” sexual exploitation of boys as young as two years’ old.
Port Kembla Local Court heard Giacon once worked for local childcare provider Big Fat Smile on a casual basis and has been involved with disability support service Interchange Illawarra and The Aspect School for autistic children.
It is understood Giacon’s alleged actions occurred after his involvement with the above groups had ceased.
Giacon was remanded in custody on Friday morning after failing to get bail, despite his family agreeing to put up $20,000 to ensure he turned up to court.
Police documents tendered in court reveal officers Giacon’s phone was taken when he was robbed at a park in Shellharbour on July 21 this year. He reported the incident to police, who caught up with the culprits 20 minutes later and retrieved Giacon’s phone.
It’s contents were later analysed by specialist police, who allegedly uncovered the cache of illegal images.
Of the 537 images, 143 fell into the second most serious category, involving penetration between children and adults, police said.
The seven-minute video depicted sexual activity between two boys, aged between 8 and 10.
In refusing bail, Magistrate Michael Stoddart said the case against Giacon was strong and he would receive a jail sentence if convicted.
