Hunt looked to have steered the Broncos to victory when they led 16-12 in the dying stages before a Kyle Feldt try four seconds from time sent the match to golden-point.
Hunt spilled the kickoff with Thurston landing the field goal from the ensuing set.
Thurston was swamped by teammates in the seconds after delivering the Cowboys their breakthrough NRL premiership but he took time to console Hunt amid the celebrations.
“I just told him to hold his head up high,” Thurston said.
“He’s had an outstanding couple of years and he’ll be a great player for years to come.
“He spent a week with us in Queensland camp and I know what he’s made of.
“He’ll come back better.
“I wanted to make sure he didn’t feel the word on his shoulders for that error.”
