Wollongong council has revealed plans for the work, which is scheduled for November and December.
It says the high-traffic pedestrian area near the beach is eroding and needs improving with a combination of mulch, garden beds, concrete and synthetic soft-fall material.
Seven new concrete benches will be installed and one young tree will be removed because it has failed to thrive. No other trees will be affected.
The busy kids’ playground will stay open during construction, which will be finished before the school holidays, the council said.
The public can have their say on the works until November 2.
Nearby, at Flagstaff Hill, the $1.12 million path upgrade between the Fishermen’s Co-op restaurants and Wollongong Harbour is due for completion in November.
