Teachers, staff and community members were riled up at Dapto and Wollongong TAFE campuses Wednesday with the launch of the “Hands off TAFE” campaign. Greens MP John Kaye visited the colleges to encourage people to attend a day of action, coinciding with a public hearing of the Upper House Committee into vocational education – and specifically TAFE - on Monday. The hearing is part of investigations into the impacts of Smart and Skilled policies.

It will begin in Nowra in the morning, before panel members travel to Wollongong TAFE for a public afternoon session from 3pm. Several locals are expected to give evidence including TAFE Illawarra Institute director Dianne Murray and Arthur Rorris from the South Coast Labour Council.
The parliamentary panel have been touring the state as part of the inquiry, while NSW Teachers Federation TAFE organiser Rob Long said so far have been quite scathing.
“It’s been really badly run by the government,” said Mr Long. “Privatisation is definitely hurting regional areas, and an indication of this is no students being at Dapto TAFE.”
