Wayne Terrence Amos was caught with 62 child abuse images on his phone and computer in May this year.
Two of the three photos found on the phone were the second highest category of child abuse material, while the 58 images found on the home computer all fell into the lowest category.
Amos admitted he got the images via websites and chatrooms.
The 58-year-old told police he had "higher than normal sexual urges" and had downloaded the images to masturbate to them.
However, he said once he'd finished he would "come back to reality and acknowledge what he'd done was wrong".
He will be sentenced next month.
