The motion recognised the steelworks has been part of the Illawarra for 88 years and has provided jobs for generations of families.
“We have a duty to the community and our children to ensure this industry remains part of the Illawarra,” the motion read.
It also realised the state of the industry needed “extraordinary measures” to protect it and praised union delegates’ efforts in saving as many jobs as possible.
Then it took aim at the NSW government to “fulfill its obligations by providing long-term monetary relief to this industry” and by “using Port Kembla-made steel in all government projects”.
“These two steps, together with the sacrifices we have made, will ensure the long-term viability of our industry.”
In a few weeks there will be another vote to formally accept the revised work conditions.
