The dramatic vote that elevated Labor's Marianne Saliba as Shellharbour's new mayor will leave many wondering what happened to the Shellharbour Liberals.
Cr Paul Rankin's last-minute decision to challenge sitting mayor and fellow Liberal Kellie Marsh came as a shock to many, fellow councillors among them.
It also highlights the politicking ratepayers can expect in mayoral votes for the next four years as councillors jostle to lead the city.
We can only hope councillors are correct when they say the politics won't damage their working relationships.
However, given the nature of politics, and the ample opportunities they will have for another crack at the title, this could be a hard promise to keep.
We say: surely it's time to put personalities aside and get on with the job of governing the city.
