Early on, prior to widespread use of email and abundance of social media platforms, the Wollongong metallers received a handwritten note from Tamworth.
“It was from a lady, she wrote to us because her son had passed away,” Rand said.
“He was killed in a car accident, and he absolutely thought the world of Segression, ‘cause we travelled to so many little regional towns to play gigs.
“He was actually buried in a Segression shirt.
“There was another young guy who was buried in our shirt, and the parents came to our Dandenong show to tell us.
“When you have that sort of effect on people… I look at it as a highlight, because it’s shown me what music, and how strong it can actually be to family and to people.”
Segression will commemorate their 20th anniversary in 2016.
Celebrations will include releasing re-imagined versions of tracks from throughout their back catalogue.
“We’re actually re-recording the whole lot, so it’s not just a blanket re-release of old stuff,” bassist/vocalist Rand explained.
The band was initially formed in 1993 as Eezee.
During their initial run from 1996-2003, Segression supported heavyweight international acts such as Pantera, Ozzy Osbourne, Slipknot, Fear Factory, Soulfly and Strapping Young Lad.
After a hiatus, in late 2009 Segression reconvened.
They soon issued the Never Dead album, and most recently, Painted In Blood.
In accordance with increased digital downloads, streaming and personalised playlists being primary forms of music consumption, Rand said Segression were “just about done with releasing ‘normal’ albums”.
“We’re gonna go to just releasing batches of songs,” he said.
“Some of which will be free, some of which will be very cheap, just so that we can continue to do what we do.
“We don’t really have the ambition to be touring the world and doing all those things; we just keep doing what we do.”
Segression will perform a home town headline show with support from Shellharbour’s Ten Years Too Late and heavy metal DJs at the UOW UniBar this Friday, November 6.
