International travellers are being urged to arrive at Australian airports early on Monday with industrial action expected to cause widespread delays.

Up to 10,000 Australian Border Force staff are expected to walk off the job for 24 hours from just after midnight, protesting about cuts to pay and conditions.

The Department of Immigration warned the strike would affect Australia's eight international airports as well as maritime ports and mail centres.

"The department is making arrangements to minimise the impact on travellers at our international airports as much as possible," assistant commissioner said Clive Murray, from the ABF's Strategic Border Command.

"Some delays are still expected and those planning on travelling overseas on Monday are encouraged to arrive early at the airport, and then to proceed directly to border clearance.

"We will work to provide the best service we can, allocating available resources where they are needed. The health, safety and security of the public and our staff continues to be our priority."

Community and Public Sector Union national secretary Nadine Flood said the latest action, which comes after a series of rolling stoppages, was in response to federal government attacks on pay, rights and conditions.

"These Border Force officers work on the front line in keeping Australia safe and they take no pleasure in disrupting travellers' plans," she said.

"They're giving up a day's pay to strike because the federal government and the department are not listening to them and are continuing to push unreasonable cuts to rights, conditions and take-home pay."
