The No 2 seed with 6-1, 3-2 ahead against Mitchell Robins when the weather deteriorated for the second time at Beaton Park, forcing the suspension of play.
Mitchell lost just one point on serve in the first set, but Robins responded.
As Mitchell’s first serve faltered, making just 10 of 22 in the second set, Robins kept the match on serve at 3-2 and 40-all when play stopped.
However, Japan’s Issei Okamura made the match against Australian eighth seed Harry Bourchier a set a piece when the rain hit.
Bourchier claimed the first set 6-2, but Okamura levelled, winning a tie break 7-2.
In the only other match yet to be completed Germany’s Sebastian Fanselow won the first set against wildcard Daniel Nolan 6-3, with the score at 1-all in the second.
Earlier, New Zealand No 5 seed Finn Tearney beat Jeremy Beale 6-4, 6-4, while Marc Polmans outlasted Patrick Fitzgerald 6-2, 7-5.
