Wollongong City Council has won a major beach safety gong in the local government insurance agency Westpool’s risk management excellence awards.

The council’s recreation manager Peter Coyte said the award recognised a program which promotes water safety along the city’s 50-kilometre coastline.
The council received $2,000 to go towards ongoing beach safety initiatives, like its emergency beacon program.
