For many of us that means a couple of choices.
Either hit the beach or take shelter in the closest air conditioned building you can find.
For some in the community the high temperatures can be much harder to bear.
Our fire fighters in the region will be on high alert.
Most importantly, the elderly in our community can be greatly impacted by extreme heat.
If you have elderly neighbours it would be a good idea to exercise some community spirit and keep an eye on them.
Make sure they are okay.
If you are out and about there are plenty of ways you can look after yourself.
Firstly, the time honoured, ‘’slip, slop, slap’’.
Rehydrate, preferably with water not alcoholic beverages.
Thankfully the weekend will bring some cooler temperatures across the region, but it certainly shows one thing.
Summer is just around the corner.
THE STEEL GAME HAS CHANGED
It was great to hear BlueScope CEO Paul O’Malley describe the work of his Port Kembla management team as “game changing’’.
Mr O’Malley was referencing the approach to save over $200million in the steelworks business and in effect save that business.
He declared the company may now even surpass that saving.
“We have made progress more quickly than expected on the cost reductions within our control and may in fact in this area – a necessary requirement given steel prices continue to fall,” he said.
It’s great news for the steelworkers that remain employed and for the region.
‘’Steelmaking is a cyclical business and at some point we expect the cycle to turn back in our favour,’’ Mr O’Malley said.
Hopefully, sooner than later.
For everything the steelworkers of the region have sacrificed, they deserve more good news to flow through the industry as quickly as possible..
