That is, the old-fashioned way, at the event's spiritual home, Huntingdale Golf Club, and get his picture up on the wall with that big crystal trophy and gold jacket.

He spoke words to that effect the day before the tournament began and, in the absence of challengers with a world ranking in the same post code as his, this event has been as much about Adam vs Huntingdale as Adam vs the rest.

Scott has not burst clear like he threatened to halfway through his second round on Friday — in fact, by day's end he was only joint leader with Victorian Peter Wilson — but coming into the weekend, it is still Adam and his clubs taking on these water-tight fairways and slower-than expected greens affected by a bit of water from above.

The course has a challenge for him to confront: its record for a Masters winner, which is an aggregate score of 268 set by Bradley Hughes in 1998 when he finished with 24-under on the old par 73 course.

Scott, who has two gold jackets, but won at Kingston Heath and Royal Melbourne, so far has a total of 134, which is -8.

One less than that over the next two days would give him 267 and the new mark, albeit at the revamped par 71 course.

After nine holes of his second round, it didn't look like Huntingdale stood a chance.

The former world No.1 was 11-under, five shots ahead of everyone and hadn't dropped a shot for 27 holes.

His odds were down to $1.40 — unheard of at that stage of a golf tournament — and the betting agencies must have thought about paying out early.

But then Huntingdale got a few shots back on the Queenslander.

The 10th hole made him pay for a bad tee shot, and then kicked him while he was down by presenting him with an horrendous lie in the bunker.

Double bogey was the damage. Then the water hazard on the 13th hole took a swing, so to speak, landing a bogey, and then the 18th gave him a parting swipe, with another bogey.

Scott, who finished one-under for the day, said his driver left him exposed.

"I only hit one fairway with it, and I pulled it out five times," he said.

To that end, Huntingdale has been able to handicap Scott by not providing the players with a practice range big enough for them to tune up their drivers.

Scott joked he might have to go over the road to Metropolitan Golf Club and see if he could let a few drivers fly in the early morning Saturday competition.

Or at least we think he was joking.

The notion that the rest of the field is just making up the numbers is, of course, unfair.

But there is definitely a "fear" factor in play.

Brett Rumford, a seasoned professional who has won five times on the European Tour, freely admitted that, after his seven-under round of 64 took him to six-under overall and into a group of three players within two shots of Scott and the little-known Wilson.

Queenslander Matt Guyant, who always seems to bob up at the Masters, is at seven-under and American George McNeill, a two-time winner on the PGA Tour, is at six-under.

"You would feel that intimidation," said Rumford, 38, considering the prospect of playing with Scott over the weekend a privilege (or burden) now with Wilson.

"When you hear the strike coming off the golf club... rocketing of the face," he said.

"You can see their walk, their lack of talk, their focus, their zone changes completely.

"You can sense that aura with anyone, let alone Adam Scott."

Wilson, a 37-year-old journeyman, said no one intimidated him: "they are only human".

But just in case the nerves get to Wilson or any of the others, Scott had some advice for them about how he handled playing with Tiger Woods.

"My trick playing with him was to not even watch him hit; actually turn my back and not get caught up in all the stuff," Scott said.

"Because great players like him are going to hit that one shot in a round that you're not sure whether you have the ability to or not."
