Ambulance NSW Illawarra district officer Inspector Terry Morrow said the accident happened around 1.30pm on a property at Croobyar west of Milton.
It is understood the man put his hand under the lawn mower while it was still going.
“He has cut the tips off three fingers, the index finger, middle finger and ring finger,” Insp Morrow said.
He said the man was driven to the intersection of Woodstock Road by private transport where he was met by NSW ambulance staff and assessed, before being taken by ambulance to the helipad at Milton Ulladulla hospital.
The road ambulance was then met by the ambulance rescue helicopter before airlifting the injured man to Liverpool Hospital.
Insp Morrow said the finger tips were recovered at the scene of the accident it was hoped they could be re-attached.
