Jarrod Whitehead, 18, was skating down the steep Bonaira Street in Kiama with his mates following behind when he clipped an edge, hitting the ground head first. He was airlifted to St George Hospital.
Mate Mitchell Rivera and others decided to do something about it on Monday, creating an online campaign via www.mycause.com.au with a target to raise $20,000 to help his family cover the medical costs.
As of midday Tuesday 157 donations had been made totaling $13,195.
On Wednesday morning $15,330 had been raised with Mr Whitehead’s mother Belinda saying the family was overwhelmed with the amount of support.
“My other son told me, and my husband and I both broke down,” she said.
“It’s beyond anything we even imagined and would love to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts.”
Her son was still in the intensive care unit on Tuesday, with doctors attempting to wake him that day. He’s not expected to leave hospital for at least another three weeks.
Witnesses described the accident as a “random horror”.
