On White Ribbon Day, Shellharbour City Council unveiled its new city welcome signs which clearly state: “Shellharbour City says NO to violence against women”.
“Everyone in our city has the right to be safe and we want our whole community to recognise that violent behaviour is unacceptable,” Mayor Marianne Saliba said.
"Domestic violence insidiously impacts every member of the family and leaches out to the broader community, impacting their health and wellbeing.”
In June, the number of domestic violence incidents reported within the Shellharbour local government area for the 12 months prior rose above the NSW rate. There were 405.7 Shellharbour incidents and 396.4 in NSW.
Cr Saliba said she hoped the visible promotion of the White Ribbon message would help people experiencing domestic violence to speak out and seek help.
