Illawarra fans can catch a glimpse of the NSW women’s league’s top two sides this weekend with the undefeated UNSW Raiders to take on the second-placed UTS Gators in the final round of the competition at Ziems Park Corrimal on Saturday.
Born and raised Dapto product Renae Hahn plays for the Raiders and said Saturday’s top of the table clash is a great chance to showcase the league in Wollongong and hopefully lay the foundations for an Illawarra team to join the league in coming seasons.
‘‘People don’t necessarily understand the sport that well yet but with the whole Jarryd Hayne thing going on it’s been really awesome for us,’’ Hahn said.
‘Now when you say ‘I play gridiron’ they have something to attach it to.
‘‘People who have never watched the game before have now because he’s playing so it’s been a big promotion for the sport.
‘‘The interest is there and a lot of girls are starting to see that they are able to play the game.
‘‘I’m sure with all the good netball and rugby girls down there [in Wollongong] they could form a killer team.’’
The Raiders beat UTS 36-0 when the sides last met but Hahn is expecting the Gators to try and make a statement before the finals.
‘‘They’re big strong and athletic but we’re undefeated at the moment so we want to keep that going.’’
The match will kickoff at 2pm, Saturday at Ziems Park.
