And that location is … Wollongong.
Influential local music label Yours and Owls – which has this year secured a number of key national and international artist shows in the city – is behind the NYE coup.
It announced on Thursday that record labels Young Turks and Siberia would host one of their “infamous” parties in Globe Lane on December 31.
Young Turks boasts acts like Jamie xx, FKA twigs (that’s Twilight star Robert Pattinson’s fiance, for the uninitiated) and The xx, while Sydney-based Siberia is home to acts like Midnight Juggernauts, Cassius Select and more.
Asked how he managed to swing such a high calibre event, Yours and Owls director Ben Tillman said “I have no idea”.
“We only really found out we could have it three weeks ago, and the council has just been really good,” he said.
“Everyone has just worked together to make it work.”
He said there had been a clear shift in the city’s attitude to such events in recent years.
“If we had proposed something like this a year or year and a half ago, it would never have happened. They probably would have laughed at us.”
“Now I think they see this stuff as being important and positive, they see that it can be good for the city’s reputation, and economically as well.”
To give punters some idea about what they could be in for at the Globe Lane party, Mr Tillman pointed to the New Year's Eve 2013 party thrown by Young Turks in Tulum, Mexico where The xx, SBTRKT, FKA twigs, Grimes and Four Tet played.
The DJs coming to Wollongong are to remain top secret, Mr Tillman said, but promised the London label would bring one of their “premier acts” as well as another “really big international DJ”.
“There’s two really big international DJs and then there’ll be a bunch of Sydney stuff and we’ll include some Wollongong stuff as well,” he said.
There will be 1500 tickets sold for Globe Lane event, which will run from 9pm on December 31 to 2am New Year’s Day.
Tickets will be released on Friday morning and are expected to sell out fast, Mr Tillman said.
