Mr Wetherall was deputy for two years and has served on the national board for four. He is a former president of the NSW and Illawarra chambers and was president of the Wollongong Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
He said he enjoyed representing the interests of business at a local, regional, state, national and international level as the chamber movement worked together at all levels more than it ever has.
Mr Wetherall took on the new role at the AGM in Canberra on Thursday after a meeting with the Prime Minister the night before.
He said the Too Big To Ignore Campaign was an example of what the chamber movement could do.
Illawarra chamber chief executive Debra Murphy said Mr Wetherall understood business at a grass roots level. "He is an Illawarra businessperson who is walking the talk and will continue to do so".
