Austinmer Public School students unveiled the Illawarra's longest bookmark on Friday, circling a whole sports field with their 125-metre tribute to reading.
Made from individual 30cm bookmarks showing students' favourite books, it marked the end of a school term jam-packed with reading activities.
"We've had Book Week, National Literacy Week, Indigenous Literacy Day and, of course, it's the National Year of Reading this year so we've had all sorts of reading events," Austinmer's teacher librarian Bronwyn Gleeson said.
Ms Gleeson created the giant bookmark to get every student involved in a fun reading activity.
"All these book-related events have been a great way to get the kids involved in reading and it's paid off, because one of the parents came up to me this afternoon and said 'thank you, you've made reading cool and my son can't stop reading at home'."
After easily conquering the "Illawarra's longest bookmark" title, Ms Gleeson applied to the Guinness World Records to see if her school can make a world record attempt next term.
