The ute travelled along one of the reserve’s pedestrian boardwalks before crashing into a guardrail some time overnight, Monday.
On Tuesday morning it remained lodged awkwardly in-situ, with one rear wheel still on the timber planks and its nose down among the plant life.
The surprise prang prompted council staff to close the boardwalk and access points to the site for several hours while a structural engineer inspected the reserve, which is an annexe of the Wollongong Botanic Garden.
Wollongong Police attended. Council also summoned a representative from the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, as the accident happened on a Biobanking site.
The ute has now been removed. Council will repair the damage to the boardwalk “as soon as possible”.
