The honour comes five years after he marched into the NSW team, scoring a century on debut, the youngest player to do so at 18 years and 294 days.
After winning a world Twenty20 title with the Sydney Sixers in 2012, Maddinson has made a success in the four-day game, scoring a century as NSW beat Queensland.
The big-hitting left-hander will lead the team when NSW meet Queensland again in Mackay, starting on Sunday.
From Shoalhaven Heads, Maddinson takes over from injured all-rounder Moises Henriques, who sustained a calf injury while bowling in the victory at the SCG.
He has scored 4811 first-class runs in 50 matches, at an average of 38.13, including seven centuries and 14 50s. Maddinson has also played two Twenty 20 international matches for Australia.
